The Presidio has been a military post since Spanish soldiers and missionaries arrived in 1776. Since then it has been occupied by Mexico (1822-48), and then the United States (1848-1994). Located at the entrance to the San Francisco Bay, it has played an unmistakable logistical role.
On 1994, the Presidio ceased operations as a military post and became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
These days the Presidio has over 150 non-residential tenants including Lucas Films, Alexa and Stillwater Sound. It also has 21 distinct residential neighborhoods featuring homes built from the 1860s through the 1970s.
