Nob Hill rises 376 feet above the waterfront and, following the gold strike of 1848, became the home of the gold, silver and railroad tycoons. The steep hill proved difficult for horse-drawn carriages, so in 1878 the residents installed their own cable-car line, still in operation today.
Grace Cathedral (1100 California Street at Taylor) atop Nob Hill is one of the largest Gothic churches in the West and the third largest Episcopal cathedral in the nation.
Nob Hill and its westerly neighbor Pacific Heights remain the most affluent areas of San Francisco.
Nob Hill homes range in price from the low $400,000s. The pictures shown here are intended to give you a general ballpark idea as to typical prices and do not represent actual listings.
