The Marina, originally marshland, sits on tons of rubble moved there after the earthquake of 1906. In the years that followed, both commercial and residential development filled this prime waterfront land with little attention paid to the unstable ground. In 1989 the devastating Loma Prieta Earthquake saw many of these structures collapse and burn. Since then, improved building codes have resulted in a more stable neighborhood and a new Marina has risen from the ashes.
