San Francisco's Financial District is considered to be one of the nation's leading financial centers. The Bank of America building (555 California St.) built in 1969, was the tallest building west of the Mississippi until the Transamerican Pyramid was constructed (1972).
Jackson Square (Jackson St. between Sansome and Montgomery) includes the city's only surviving early commercial area. This historic district, dating from 1850, contains buildings that have survived both the 1906 and more recent 1989 Loma Prieta earthquakes. Jackson Square features many antique shops.
