Bayview

The shipyard at Hunters Point was established in 1870. Days before Pearl Harbor, this shipyard was acquired by the US Navy who continued operations until 1974. It was then leased to a ship repair company which continued operations until 1986. Environmentalist continue to believe toxic discharges from Hunters Point Naval Shipyard are contaminating San Francisco Bay and lawsuits have been filed.

The Bayview district in the southeast corner of the city reamains one of the few neigborhoods where housing is available at modest prices. However, Bayview is home to combustion turbines, a raw sewage plant, tallow facilities, concrete and aggregate plants, and many other industrial facilities.
