One of San Francisco's oldest and best known landmarks, the Coit Tower is a must-see monument. The 180-foot structure, shaped like a fire hose nozzle, was erected in 1933 as a gift from Lilly Hitchcock Coit, a nineteenth-century heiress, who was passionate about fire engines.
Originally called "Signal Hill" the name was changed when the telegraph replaced the semaphore system. The area was originally populated by fishermen and the homes were quite modest. However, with the construction of the tower, the homes were gradually replaced by more affluent structures offering panoramic views of the bay.
